I have just received a link to Elon’s “We-Robot” post (https://x.com/marionawfal/status/1844620518697336942?s=46) and here’s my comment on it.
“Not likely.
Great technologists, including Elon Musk, do not well understand two things: politics and economics. It goes against their nature to deal with too much uncertainty, I guess.
Such mass robotization, especially in the “I, Robot” style, must be precluded by a revolutionary change in social and economic orders. Universal Basic Income (UBI) and a gigantic, planetary-scale expropriation of corporate and private assets by the government would be needed to attempt to make an “I, Robot” future a reality.
Without that, the average citizen would never be able to afford such expensive and costly-to-maintain mechanisms as private “robo-servants.” Specially, as all jobs would be taken by those robots too. Additionally, energy consumption and the use of natural resources would increase drastically, requiring the government, under growing pressure from the electorate, to take charge of entire industries, as happened in 1942 after Pearl Harbor and is starting to happen now.
Yes, on the surface, we are slowly getting on track to become a highly regulated post-Marxian “Socialism 2.0” society. However, history has proven that socialism does not work, as it doesn’t provide good incentives for innovation. Look at Europe, where, compared to the USA, the number of tech unicorns created is negligible, as an example.
So, we have a paradox: to create an “I, Robot” world, we need socialism to work, but to create “I, Robot” technologies, we’ll need capitalism to work.
Figuring out how to make socialism and capitalism work together will take generations. Still, it won’t prevent dreamers like Elon from trying to implement it in Silicon Valley or in similar “sandbox” locations with extremely high per-person income, excellent infrastructure, universal rule of law, and perfect weather conditions.”
