What Does Google Tell As About The Popularity of Different Blockchain Applications?
I decided to spend a couple of minutes and to sort ten widely recognized and popularized by main-stream medias applications of DLT by the number of results, which google search gave me when I entered the phrase “using blockchain for …”.
I’ve got the following:
- “.. security token offerings”: 4,650,000;
- “.. keeping and exchanging personal records and identities”: 4,570,000;
- “.. tracing the movement of goods throughout supply chain”: 4,300,000;
- “.. implementing direct democracy”: 576,000;
- “.. facilitating donations”: 547,000;
- “.. tokenizing real estate”: 413,000;
- “.. remittances and cross-border transactions”: 362,000;
- “.. tracking government’ expenditures”: 337,000;
- “.. creating immutable land registries”: 99,800;
- “.. inhibiting the circulation of illicit products (drugs, ‘blood diamonds’, brand counterfeits etc”: 49,900;
As you can see we have three clearly defined Groups: A) Largest: “STOs”, “Identities” and “Supply Chain”; B) Smallest: “Illicit products” and “Land registries”; C) Medium: All the rest.
I guess those results can be explained by two factors: corporate interests and the dominance of developed countries in the English-speaking part of WWW. The interest for Group A (largest) is mostly driven by financial institutions, big ITs and FMCGs as well as their employees and clients. Group B (smallest) reflects those uses of blockchain, which primarily benefit “third world countries” with their week laws. Group C it’s “us”, people, forming the “middle ground”, as usual.
